This series consists of correspondence, memoranda, news clippings and publications, promotional materials, meeting agendas and minutes, cassette tapes, and reports maintained by Assistant Secretary for Tourism Fabian Chavez, Jr. Major subjects include administrative matters relating to the U.S. Travel Service (USTS), including USTS offices, personnel, and budgets; congressional relations, especially with Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii; legislation relating to travel and tourism; research on travel and tourism issues; the USTS’s relationships with governmental and private industry organizations relating to tourism; the Discover American program; and state and local tourism programs and expositions. This series also includes meeting and travel files consisting of correspondence, travel forms, and agendas relating to events that Chavez attended as part of his duties in the USTS.

Daniel K. Inouye (b. September 7, 1924 – d. December 17, 2012) was a United States Senator from Hawaii from 1963 to 2012. He was a member of the Democratic Party and served as President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 2010 until his death. He also served as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations. During World War II, Inouye served as part of the 442nd Infantry Regiment and lost his right arm to a grenade wound.
